Major Drilling Brings Hands-on Drilling Experience to 2018 S-IMEW PDAC Student Workshop

Canada’s top 26 geoscience students went into the field with Major Drilling on May 7, 2018 to find out first-hand what quality, safety and results look like from a leader in the industry. These students were part of the annual Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop, or S-IMEW. For more than 10 years, this unique, two-week workshop in Sudbury, Ontario has brought students face-to-face with real industry experience such as Major Drilling’s drilling demonstration. This was the first time many workshop participants had seen or used drilling equipment.

Major Drilling offered its staff to conduct the demonstration including Ben Graham, Vice President of Human Resources and Safety; Kevin Slemko, Corporate Business Development Manager; Brian Tylko, Business Development Manager (Percussive Canada); David Ruddy, Exploration Area Manager (Sudbury and Atlantic Provinces); Mike Burns, Surface Exploration Supervisor; and Cody Lanovaz, Percussive Area Manager (Western Canada). These knowledgeable staffers also taught S-IMEW students about the importance of partnering with the right contractor for a safe and successful drilling program.

Major Drilling knows the value of investing in the budding mining industry workforce. That is why it was proud to offer this unique, hands-on drilling experience. Excellence in relationships, communication, teamwork and partnership are pillars of the Major Drilling approach to every job. These are the principles S-IMEW students took away with them from their day out with Major Drilling.

“The entire experience with Major was exemplary in its demonstration of mutual respect for our professions and good communications as being keys to success in achieving the objectives of a project,” said S-IMEW event organizers. “The stations set up to demonstrate drill rigs and tools gave the students a real appreciation for these key components of the exploration and mining process.” Feedback from students was also overwhelmingly positive with participants praising the mix of instruction and hands-on experience.

Major Drilling is pleased to lead out in building up the next generation of industry leaders. S-IMEW is an initiative of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) of which Major Drilling is a proud member as well as a Gold Plus-level sponsor during the 2018 PDAC Convention.
